Look for nice optional equipment such as the arch, LED lighting, a 380-horsepower Volvo Penta big-block engine, and a Raymarine chartplotter.The Monterey 288SS is a great day boat on its own. When you can get one gently used for a decent price, it’s even better.

Formula 382 FasTECH
I used to cover the high-performance boating industry pretty intensely. When I was editor at the erstwhile Powerboat magazine, I got to drive the best and the fastest boats on the market. As much as I love high-performance boats, there are precious few of them I would own. One of them is the Formula 382 FASTech. With twin Mercury Racing HP500EFI engines, the ride is thrilling. Plus, these boats are well-built. Formula still builds them and the only real difference between this one and the new models are paint and trim. The hull and deck are unchanged. That’s a good thing because these 382 FASTechs really work. When offshore racing’s Factory 2 class was in full swing, these were the boats to have. The Fountains might have been a bit faster, but when the water got rougher, the 382 FASTechs came into their own.
Inside, the ergonomics of these boats are unmatched. With McLeod electric bolsters and foot rests, you could adjust the helm to drive while seated or standing. The controls fall naturally to hand and the dash is laid out as well as can be done.

Silverton 38 Convertible

I have to admit, I’ve always tended toward the speedy and sporty side of boating, but the Silverton 38 Convertible has me investigating penalties for removing money from my IRA. First, it’s a very modern yacht that tends to go for a genuinely reasonable price. It’s big enough to live aboard if you want, and it’s still new enough that it won’t look like a single-wide in a trailer park full of double-wides.
