Pontoon boats are America’s favorite boat, as we at Boat Trader can attest. Year after year, interest in pontoon boats consistently outranks every other type of boat on the market. That’s likely due to the their large platform for entertaining and the fact they are rugged and relatively easy to operate, making them ideal for inland lakes, rivers shallow marshes and crowded waterways. Hop on a pontoon boat, invite your friends, fire up the grill and pump the tunes – and you’ve got yourself a party. But what about watersports? Can pontoons really be used for wake surfing and skiing too? You betcha, and there are a growing number of pontoon boat models that are set up to accommodate exactly that.

Let’s take a look at two pontoon boats that we like for wakesports heading into the upcoming 2022 boating season.

2022 Montara Surf Boss 25

Back in 2018, Minnesota-based Montara Boats set out to crack the code on building a comfortable pontoon boat that could double as a high-performance wake sports boat. Perhaps most remarkably, they were able to built this pontoon boat with inboard engines AND an advanced ballast system. Fast forward a few years later and the company has been busy perfecting their Surf Boss pontoon boats, creating an impressive lineup of inboard-powered pontoon boats with serious performance capabilities. Still feeling a bit skeptical about a wake boat that sits on pontoon tubes? Well, it might be time to take another look.

The all new 2022 G2 Series Surf Boss 25 by Montara is a one-of-a-kind pontoon that riders of all levels can surf behind with confidence. She comes fully loaded with a 4,200 pound ballast system, GPS speed control, digital throttle controls and a carrying capacity of over 20,000 pounds. A Rockford sound system and plush amenities along with a yacht-like interior cockpit equipped with USB chargers, cupholders and premium upholstery provide an enjoyable experience, simple maintenance and easy piloting.

The builder touts that their Surf Boss models are built with “weapons grade materials” and make wakeboarding, surfing, skiing and cruising within reach for families and wave riders at an attainable price. But can you really fuse pontooning and surfing? This bold state-of-the-art boat sets out to put that question to rest.

2022 Manitou LX Pontoon Boat

Manitou LX 23

The Manitou LX is not your average pontoon boat. For starters, she’s a tritoon (three tubes instead of two) that incorporates what Manitou calls their “V-Toon” technology that allows the hull to plane quickly, corner with the agility of a fiberglass sport boat and excel when it comes to watersports. She is available in a 23 foot version, 25 foot version and a 27 foot version, with either single or double outboard engine packages. We’d recommend the 23-foot version for wake surfing as that’s right about the sweet spot for a nimble sport boat to be used with wake sports.

But what makes the best pontoon boats for wakesurfing and skiing? Well, for starters, the 23 LX carves and banks like a runabout and treats everyone onboard to a thrilling ride. Features include a sport tower, ski tow bar and upgraded sound system, all of which combine to make the LX equipped and ready to hang with the most blinged-out wake sports boat. She boasts stunning looks and delivers breathtaking performance. New this year, the LX is rated for up to 900 HP on the dual engine models! Just wait till you feel what that massive twin-engine power can do for your holeshots.
